Classes & Workshops

APNLC offers a variety of classes at various times throughout the week:

  • Literacy & Basic Skills (LBS)
  • English as an Additional Language (ESL/EAL)
  • Digital literacy
  • Health & wellness
  • One-to-one tutoring
  • Food skills
  • Financial literacy
  • Indigenous literacy*

Which class or combination of classes would be right for you? Classes are taught by qualified instructors. We change the classes throughout the year. Please contact us for an intake and assessment.

*APNLC is in proud partnership with the Native Men’s Residence life skills program, Apaenmowineen. We provide literacy programming for Apaenmowineen participants on a weekly basis.

All program participants must be residents of Ontario, above the age of 18, and have a valid social insurance number (SIN).

Summer 2023 Program Schedule

Tech Talk Digital Literacy

Tuesdays 6:00 - 8:00 pm

A group for older adults who want to improve their digital literacy skills whether it’s on a laptop, tablet, or smartphone. Each workshop focuses on a different topic.

Reading & Writing

Thursdays 1:00 - 2:30 pm

Learners improve reading and writing skills through reading books and news articles as well as practicing a variety of writing techniques.

Creative Writing

Tuesdays 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

English as an
Additional Language (EAL/ESL)

Mondays 1:00 - 2:45 pm

For intermediate English speakers at CLB levels 3 – 5. Students develop reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills with support from a TESOL-certified instructor.

AP Youth Development Literacy Program

Mondays 6:00 - 8:00 pm

A program for youth 18 – 29 who are looking for a space to meet their peers, find out about employment and volunteer opportunities, and get more involved in their communities.

Community Kitchen

Thursdays 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

An 8-week class for participants to learn about food safety, kitchen math, and how to follow a recipe while preparing delicious and healthy dishes. Both beginner & experienced cooks are welcome!

One-to-one Tutoring

Monday - Friday various times

Learners are matched with a trained volunteer tutor and meet once a week to work on their learning goals.

Financial Literacy

Tuesdays 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Learners gain hands-on skills with budgeting, dealing with financial institutions, and understanding taxes & government benefits.

Visual Art Literacy

Fridays 12:30 - 2:30 pm

Learners explore various approaches to painting and learn about art history. Beginners welcome!

Pathways to Growth

Monday - Friday 1:00 - 3:00 pm

A new program for people interested in careers in urban agriculture, horticulture, and landscaping. Participants will practice hands-on skills in the garden and greenhouse and hear from industry professionals in the field.

Career Exploration
Workshops

Mondays 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

A workshop series geared toward people interested in learning about post-secondary, apprenticeship, and skills training programs that match their interests.
