APNLC offers the following Adult Literacy Programs:
The frontline literacy workers of Alexandra Park Neighbourhood Learning Centre plan an individualized program that is outcomes-based and goal-directed. Each individualized program fits into one of the following two upgrading categories:
Full-time Adult
Literacy Classes:
We offer LBS classes for learners at levels 1 to 5. This is a small group of 8-15 learners that meets four days a week, Monday-Thursday, five hours a day. Through learner centred activities, learners develop important life skills such as reading, writing, math, and computers skills
.
Mondays and Tuesdays are devoted to reading comprehension and writing practice. Advanced learners undertake a novel study to enhance their note taking and critical thinking skills. As students synthesize and analyse the book, they discuss the plot, characters, metaphors, and themes.
On Wednesdays and Thursdays, learners take part in math and computer classes. During math class, learners follow a curriculum focused on patterning, critical thinking skills, and basic numeracy skills. Furthermore, on Thursdays, the LBS group works on developing and enhancing basic computer skills.
On occasion, learners go on field trips to enhance the learning process, fostering increased motivation for learning, a more positive attitude towards community, and the acquisition of new skills.
It should be noted here that potential learners can join any program to achieve individualized goals or any combination of the following goals: independence, employment, and further education.
One-to-one Tutoring:
Individuals who do not have the time to attend literacy classes are individually matched with volunteer tutors. We refer to each learn and tutor working together as a match. Each match meets at the Centre at least once a week for two hours. The frontline workers at the Centre support each match with materials, resources, and regular check-ins. |
